The former vocalist for Iron Maiden is facing jail time over claims regarding disability compensation fraud. Paul Andrews, better known as Paul Di'Anno, is an English singer best known as being the vocalist for Iron Maiden during their rise to fame starting in 1978. He has since had a solo career and been involved in a number of bands including Killers and Battlezone, as well as released an autobiography titled The Beast: Singing With Iron Maiden-The Drugs, the Groupies . . . the Whole Story Di'Anno had claimed he was unable to work due to nerve damage in his back, collecting a pension for his disability. However, after an anonymous tip sent to authorities regarding a YouTube video of him performing in 2006 where he dances and headbangs during a live performance, authorities have stripped his benefits and are now charging him with fraud. Di'Anno has been told to prepare for jail time. His sentence will be passed down on March 11.
Di'Anno was kicked out of Maiden in 1981 when the other band members and management claimed his performances were slipping due to increased drug usage. Di'Anno denies this and states the reason for his departure was the continual fighting between him and band manager, Rod Smallgood, as well as bassist, Steve Harris.
Regardless Di'Anno is still a great vocalist and performer and often covers Maiden songs written while he was in the band (and their newer tracks), and also other Metal bands including Megadeth and ACDC. Hopefully he beats the charge or he could be covering Elvis Presley's 'Jail House Rock' in the big house...
