Actually in my opinion, as a stream of indie music or genre of music that "not even exist" (no-red), because the so-called indie music it is to distinguish between the mainstream with indie. So indie music is a term to distinguish between the music played by professional musicians with amateur musicians.
But definitely indie music is a movement based on what we have, do-it-yourself, ethics that we have a start of recording, distribution and promotion with their own money. Although there will be another difference between indie with DI Y itself.
How pengkriterian between indie to mainstream?
Commonly referred to by the mainstream is the mainstream, where bands who take shelter under a big label, an established industry. These bands are marketed widely which are also widely promotional coverage, nationally and internationally, and they dominated the campaign in all media, ranging from print media, multimedia and electronic media until they are exposed properly.
So if we speak the criteria of the mainstream with indie is more to the industry, the difference is more to the value of investments issued by the label. If the problem of talent or talents, no one deny that indie bands are sometimes better than the mainstream bands. So here is only a matter of money, because the music industry based on profit, so the labels invest substantial capital to seek greater profits, yes, that was on its investment.
How indie music can grow in Indonesia?
Indie music grows naturally in Indonesia and no one deny that rock n 'roll in America itself also grows naturally although initially opposed by parents and religious leaders. If in Indonesia itself is the impact because we idolize the band outside. So if we browse, almost all the bands Indonesia is epigon from outer bands. They started their career with songs from the outer bands ranging from Shania Twain, God Bless until the early 90s bands still often carry a tune people.
So why are they there? First they idolize these bands, then they also become inspired to become a rockstar. Being a rockstar is a dream of almost all young people because of what was exposed in the media, be a rockstar it enjoyable and fun. That initial seed. But they also realize that there are limitations in which penetrate the music industry when as a rock musician who tend to be extreme, they would play rock music they like.
So automatically they do not look at rock music they play as something worthy of an important sale because they are old idealism. After that, accepted by the industry is a recent affair.
About a year how many indie music in Indonesia began to exist?
Based on my knowledge, actual or indie music was once called the underground had been around since the 1970s. When Shania Twain began his career with directly contracted by Remaco, in Indonesia began with bands such as God Bless, AKA, Giant Step, Super Kid from Bandung, Solo and Terncem of Bentoel of Malang. At that time they have declared that their band underground and this information I read in a magazine published Aktuil 1971.
Inside the magazine was written that there is Underground Music Festival in Surabaya. There is a competition between bands, represented by God Bless from Jakarta, Giant Step from Bandung, Malang and Bentoel of Tencrem of Solo. They compete and in my opinion, this is the forerunner of the underground scene or indie. From there also why indie bands are emerging from these cities, the band who then inherit what those predecessors.
I think a lot of research that says that the year 1993 was a year of indie music was born or established, when PAS Band released an album, do you think?
PAS band who popularized it, but I think that giving birth is the bands of the past. Nevertheless, each generation is always going revision, the mistakes of their predecessors to fix. Mistakes of the predecessor is never released an album, the song always others, always happy to track people and popular with the lack of documentation about their music.
So if you spelled it correctly established PAS band but not those who gave birth to indie music. Even the album's first indie album is not PAS Band For Through The SAP was, but the album from Thunder Gipsy, they make the album around 1976. It was also revealed from the Deny Sakrie recent and thunder album Gipsy probably the first indie album.
But definitely, PAS Band popularize indie movement in 1993 with his album sold 5000 copies and sold out. And what the PAS Band became the inspiration of all the bands that exist at the time. Then before the birth Puppen, Pure Saturday, Waiting Room and others. So I think PAS Band inspire enough young people to move in this field.
The influence of anything that helps the development of indie music in Indonesia?
Effect of the first, if you distinguish now with 10 years ago, now it is clear this movement is greater. The most obvious is the globalization of information that is driven by the Internet. Become even greater in the late 1990s because of the internet were scattered everywhere, cafes, colleges and schools. Information on ancient music like this is very exclusive. Information can only be obtained from outside the magazines. We also ordered a T-Shirt to still be a primitive manner, using the catalog, fill out the form and pay by credit card.
If today everything became easier with the internet, everything is "maximum accelerated." So I think this is all because of the role of the Internet, coupled with the MySpace and Friendster (group websites-ed). Infrastructure development is also different, if 10 years ago only a few indie labels. Definition of indie labels were sometimes still wrong here. So 10 years ago indie labels it a bit, it's a lot, although still a bit of business with good and true. But the infrastructure is better. We also have a rock club for a gig and a variety of media that help its development. Even its development in Indonesia is much more attractive compared with other countries in Southeast Asia. All because of better infrastructure, although there are still many shortcomings.
With the development of good indie music in Indonesia, the characteristic that distinguishes whether the indie music scene in Indonesia and other countries?
The difference is that viewers seldom are willing to pay a ticket, never buy drinks if you're in rockclub and less willing to buy the release. This is in the negative connotation [laughs]. In a positive connotation is the number of new bands who were born with various types of new music. If 10 years ago when a music magazine to introduce the trend thrash metal metal then it becomes a child. But now there is not a trend that is dominating, when there is a trend that not all share the emo kids emo kids but there are still indie pop, new wave, high octane rock and others. Music fans now more segmented.
So I think this is a good development. But more unique again yesterday when I visited Japan and Germany there is something they do not have, that spirit to stick together. In Indonesia, all the musicians to communicate, gather and stay in touch with a healthy, well child metal and new wave, indie pop with hardcore, they all still have good relations. In fact we have an event named SGM or sintinggilamiring where large or small band with various schools to perform at one stage. Kinship abroad is rarely encountered, even the band with the same flow was not necessarily known.
I read a lot that the "distributions" to be one factor in the development of Indonesian indie music, how do you think?
Right. Distributions could be extra points for the infrastructure that was. The first distro around Jakarta called Pose located in Depok area around the year 95an. That's the first distro that is around Jakarta and eventually many flourishing in Indonesia. Distro is a plus point for indie music, for indie bands will release anything they need an outlet to sell their products, whether it releases, merchandise, souvenirs and so the distributions become an alternative retail rather than the places that already exist such as Aquarius Mahakam or other places. Phenomena like that already exist in Indonesia.
And do not forget, the independent spirit of the indie music movement also spread to barbagai field, one of which is the independent film movement. Independent film inspired by the indie music movement. Even jazz album made by Indra Lesmana inspired by the spirit of indie music movement. So the ethos of indie music movement by all my friends are already affected the other areas.
What do you think the media position of indie music from 10 years ago until now?
To my knowledge since the rotor, when it was the only mainstream media that have a good relationship with the indie musician is O magazine. Because the first album was distributed by Hi Pure Saturday and so was the Cubic is providing 2 pieces sample songs for free via Hai. So O is one of the good medium to do with indie musicians until there is an issue around 1994 of which only discussing indie bands.
So good media support at that time only from O which one of them as access to information about indie music. But then the magazine was left by readers because of the presence of the internet and the many cases of confusion and ambiguity of data interpretation in writing about this musical movement. I suspect this because the author lazy to do research, verification and more in-depth observation due to deadline pressure. But they still support up to now. So I think O was the first time.
How is the development of indie music today?
Crazy lah! From the start the era of Aquarius recruited PAS, Suckerhead with Aquarius, Jun Fan Gung Foo, Superman Is Dead by Sony, Shaggydog with EMI to The Upstairs with Warner Music. Clearly the development of indie music will become the embryo of a new mainstream music. So what will happen is going to be a field of indie music's growth and development which will later berbuahnya on major labels. So their biggest contribution is bringing change to the diverse types of music in Indonesia.
Then another development that is if the first if musicians want to record must wear a half-inch ribbon with a studio is expensive, can now with a cheap digital technology with a system of home recording, musicians can make the release easily and cheaply. Because I'm sure eventually all of the national big bands will be born of generations of indie bands. Maximum of about ten years.
Actually, our musical history far behind in my opinion. If outside, Elvis Presley began his career with indie in the mid 50s while in Indonesia only started now. So indie bands will one day become big bands and its development can be seen from PAS Band and Naif.
Other developments can be seen from the stage-stage art. If you want to see the development of musical tastes of young people, you do not see art performances such as Soundrenaline. But you should look into performing arts high school kids (pensi), all the bands who play there is their own choice, they do the polling mechanism to select artists who will play in their pensi. So I think it is an honest taste, unlike the major event that usually occurs deals behind the desk.
The first time, indie bands rarely get a good stage. The stage is always smaller and at a gig that afternoon when the sun overhead. If the current indie bands to play at the same stage with great artist with a clock that is not much different. They can show adjacent to the headliner. In fact there is a tendency that high school kids bored with major artists or prefer mainstream and indie bands. This is because indie kids bring fresh blood to their events. Ten years ago not to imagine that the indie bands to play on stage like this.
Another development is selling independent albums that increase. But for more concrete data I do not have. It's just that the younger generation of indie music listeners this is far better than 10 years ago. Children today are not contaminated with the ancient people actually offer something new with a better mentality than their predecessors.
They buy the merchandise, buying tapes and even get around to follow their idol indie artists where they gig. This is a phenomenon that probably does not exist 10 years ago. They support good indie music. These are the things that draw from the development of indie music in Indonesia.
Do you think the impacts arising from the development of the indie music scene in Indonesia?
The first is the existence of bands who grew up in the indie has started to become a big fan basenya and increasingly well established as PAS Band, Naif, Superman Is Dead, Ten2Five, Maliq & D'Essentials, Mocca, Koil, White Shoes & The Couples Company , The Brandals, The Upstairs, grin and so forth.
Then the second is the taste. Improvement of society as a whole musical tastes. Although in my opinion had worsened again with the king but for me there is a better alternative than filled by music that did not develop from earlier times until today.
And now just waiting for a record company dared to large investments and take advantage of this industry. Because in my opinion, if the indie music industry develops it will affect the music industry at the macro and vice versa.
Then the next one is going to impact the development of indie labels that supported by major labels. As was first started in the late 90s by the Independent / Pops with Aquarius Musikindo. So also with the more serious the independent record label in business and promote the latter was heavily done by Aksara Records in Jakarta and in Bandung FFWD Records.
